Artist's Statement

"Epithelium” is an experimental film that was made as a result of concurrent residencies undertaken by the artist Catherine Truman at the Ophthalmic imaging unit at Flinders Eye and Vision Research Centre and the State Herbarium and Botanic Gardens of South Australia.

Filmed in collaboration with an ophthalmic photographer, Angela Chappell, with sound design and video editing by Ian Gibbins, Truman’s aim was to produce a creative response that examines the role that light plays in human vision and plant growth; the shared structure of the retina of a human eye (in this instance belonging to the artist) and the vascular network of a leaf.

Beyond the physics and biochemistry, we have our networks—we are enmeshed by interconnections. These are our rootstocks and tendrils; our capillaries and veins; our nerve fibres and synapses. Created from an ophthalmic imaging device with ambient sounds from the machine and its surroundings, the film is an exploration of ways of seeing and sharing light, as implemented by visual creatures such as ourselves, and photosynthetic plants.
